09/06/2015 - College PREP - Kansas City, KS Sweeney continues to show solid play in his baseball abilities both at 3B and in the OF. At 3B, he attacks balls with his feet as he works to square balls up, displaying clean hands. Defensive grade will continue to improve in the IF as he plays through balls more while presenting hands more out front. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in working to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well through the fielding process as he works to get rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. At the plate, he continues to shine through an open / balanced setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Power numbers will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more aggressively.

07/30/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 Dakota improved his foot speed at the event as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.20. He utilizes his foot quickness well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he reads balls better off the bat and takes proper first steps. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a solid base with hands working through a short swing path. He makes consistent contact, through a line drive type approach, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he finishes his swing and uses his lower half more. At the event, he was 4 for 13. He did show on the mound with fastball showing a range of 70-74 mph with sinking action. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

06/16/2014 - College PREP - Liberty (Kansas City), MO Dakota showed solid overall improvements in every area of his game. In the OF, Dakota showed good body control, solid routes and angles to the ball, and proper footwork. He has sure hands, a clean exchange, and a good arm stroke with carry to his target. Dakota raised his arm grade to a 45. OF skills will further improve by playing more through and continuing to add arm strength. At 3B, Dakota has good pre-pitch actions, sure hands, and he makes plays consistently. He will need to work to field further out front, quicken his footwork, and add flexibility. At the plate, Dakota has a balanced set-up, a middle of the field approach, and an activated load. He swings in good rhythm, has direct hands to the ball, and he can hit to all fields. More lower 1/2 and more extension through the ball will help spike hitting numbers.

05/26/2013 - College PREP - Odessa (Kansas City), MO Dakota is a lanky, athletic SS/RHP that will graduate in 2016. At SS, feet are active as he works to square balls up and makes the routine plays, displaying clean hands. He needs to attack balls more, play through, and present hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Sweeney shows a squared, athletic setup with balance. He shows an aggressive approach with hands working through a level swing path. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work on getting stride foot down sooner to work on time and keep hands through the baseball at contact. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 68-70 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break and will improve as he learns to stay on top of pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength. With 3 years to further develop, Dakota has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
