Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2015 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Dalton is a hardworking, coachable player who shows a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best and now shows outstanding power potential through an athletic setup. He is strong and has strength in his swing with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Hands are quick and work inside the ball as he utilizes all fields, displaying gap to gap pop. At the event, he was 2 for 6 with a 2B and 3B. At 1B, he presents a target and displays proper footwork around the bag. Hands are clean, but he needs to present glove more out front. On the mound, he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 76 mph. Fastball shows good sinking action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break and he maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Dalton has a lot of potential and is a sure player to follow.

10/18/2015 - College PREP - Lexington, KY Dalton continues to show as a 1B/RHP and continues to show improvements at both positions with a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he has improved the most through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. At 1B, defensive grade has improved, showing smooth / fluid actions. He displays solid footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft / sure and consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. Feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body, presenting glove well out front. He utilizes quick feet well in his lateral movements, showing solid range. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 74 mph. Fastball displays plus arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a plus feel for with arm side run. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

12/27/2011 - Vero Beach Christmas Camp and Tournament Dalton is a 2017 with a strong lower half and a big/broad body structure. He plays 1B and also is a RHP. As an infielder Dalton uses two hands, efficient footwork, fields the ball out front and he has playable range. He needs to fix up his basic fielding position (he is too high), take better angles to the ball and polish up his footwork around the bag. On the mound Dalton has good command of his fastball but he needs to develop the same command with his off speed pitches. He has a tendency to rush through his balance point (leans forward) and he needs to develop a CH. At the plate Dalton has an athletic setup, he is a hitch loader, no stride guy but he is centered\/square, lower half gets through, balance is centered/strong, great bat speed, short/on plane swing path and smooth rhythm. His biggest obstacle as a hitter will be to fix his timing (he has a tendency to be late). If Dalton can make that adjustment his contact will become more consistent and his hitting will benefit greatly. Also he should consider a leg kick stride to help smooth out the stride/load process. Dalton has a very good body structure and a big upside. If he can make the adjustments and polish up his skills he will be a very good player in the future.

07/10/2011 - Select Training at the All-Star Game (Pre HS) Dalton is a big, 2017 graduate who plays 1B and is a RHP. In the infield he showed active footwork and his fielding position is low and out front. He does have a tendency however to present late. Dalton displayed playable range and average body control. On the mound he has a good loose approach. He needs to work on his balance though because he rotates too far back causing him to fly open on the front side. This makes Dalton have an ineffective front side. At the plate Dalton has an athletic setup, short/square stride, and he is a hitch loader. His weight is too far back and he tends to anchor his backside causing him to partially use his lower half. He displayed fast bat speed, smooth rhythm but his timing is late. Dalton is a quiet kid who would benefit from being more vocal. He is very coachable though and has the ability to be a good player in the future.

04/10/2011 - Interactive Video Program - Indianapolis, IN Dalton is a 1st baseman / RHP with a big, solid frame. In the INF, Dalton has a good pre-pitch set-up, sure hands, and playable footwork. He fields in a square position, his exchange is clean, and he throws with a long arm action and consistency to his target. On the mound, Dalton has good balance, a controlled balance point, and an in-line delivery. He completes his delivery well and gets his FB over the plate. Offensively, Dalton has a short stride, average bat speed, and he makes square contact with the baseball. He hits the ball hard and will develop power down the road. If Dalton can work on the following, overall skills can further improve.

Defense
1. Improve range
2. Quicken exchange
3. Long toss
Pitching
1. Quicken arm action
2. More leg drive
3. Land on balls of feet
Offense
1. Throw hands to ball
2. More lower 1/2.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
