Official Scouting Report

01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Caniano continues to show as a solid arm on the mound. His delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work loose and free to the plate. His fastball showed a range 86-88 mph with hard arm side run. Breaking ball displays gradual sweeping action. He displayed 3 quality innings of work. Command / control are a plus as he attacks hitters by throwing strikes with all his pitches. He was listed as a top 10 2013 graduate at the event. Here is his write up from www.baseballfactory.com: Dan is a polished young RHP who was close to dominant in his outing in Arizona. He has a compact, repeatable delivery that leads to a consistent release point on all of his pitches. His arm works free and easy and generated upper 80s velocity (we have seen his touch 91 in the past). Dan pounded the strike zone with his fastball and his sweeping curveball showing the ability to keep hitters off balance. In his three showcase innings he struck out seven and was very efficient with his pitches. This is a young pitcher who could walk onto many college campuses today and get outs.

08/21/2011 - College PREP - Farmingville (Long Island), NY Caniano showed similar abilities as we had previously seen at Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament. He still shows as a two-way player as a RHP / OF, projecting slightly better on the mound for the next level. Fastball showed a range of 84-85 mph on a slight downhill plane, though we have seen him through 91 into a radar gun before. Off-speed pitches show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all of his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. In the OF, feet are active and aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls but needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Offensively, Daniel shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He needs to work on letting the ball travel and work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields.

06/23/2011 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2 Daniel is a young, athletic 2-way player that pitches and plays OF. He showed some improvements in his game since his last workout in NY. He lowered his 60 time from 7.57 to 7.26, and increased his radar velocity from 85 to 91 MPH. On the mound, Daniel has an easy delivery, a quick / fluid arm action, and he works in good tempo. He has good glove side lead, he locates his FB well, and he is effective when he is down in the zone. Daniel can improve on the mound if he can avoid re-coiling, land softer, and sharpen his off-speed and command but his velocity is very impressive considering he is just going into his junior year in high school. In the OF, Daniel has quiet actions, a soft glove, and he moves side to side well. He takes good angles to the ball, he gathers himself well, and he gets a good crow hop toward his target. OF skills can improve if Daniel can lighten his feet, quicken his first step, and get on top of his throws. Offensively, Daniel has a balanced set-up, good separation, and solid bat speed. He puts the ball in play, he shows some pop to the pull side, and he makes good use of his lower 1/2. Hitting grades can improve with a shorter stride, more direct hands to the ball, and with more extension through the baseball. Caniano will impress the college coaches with his current abilities, and he still has 2 years of high school remaining.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
