01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament This athletic corner infielder continues to shine. Defensively, he shows quick/athletic actions moving well from right to left around the GB. Hands are soft as he gathers smoothly and fires strong/accurate throws to 1B. At the plate, Darren stands in with quiet/simple actions, waiting for his pitch. He squares the ball up consistently and drives the ball with some pop. A well-rounded player - Contreras has the tools that will translate well into the next level.

09/13/2015 - National Tryout Plus - La Verne (Los Angeles), CA Darren continues to show a lot of improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an outstanding runner at 6.99. At the plate is where he has improved the most through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through and through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and displaying gap to gap pop. At SS, defensive grade are now outstanding, displaying smooth / fluid actions. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process showing big play potential in the MIF. He moves well laterally, flashing range and shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. Throws are accurate with life and carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Darren will get a lot of looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

10/22/2014 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Darren is a skilled corner infielder who has a very strong arm. Defensively, he shows active pre-pitch footwork moving into a square/athletic fielding position. He presents if glove out in front, is sure handed and fields the ball smoothly. Ball is quick/clean from glove to hand as he has a cannon of an arm (91 mph) throwing BB's across the diamond. With the bat, Darren displays an open stance with rhythm to load. He tracks the ball into the zone and waits for his pitch. Plus barrel accuracy allows him to consistently square the ball up. Power potential is there if he can engage and fire his lower 1/2. This all-around talented corner infielder projects well and should make an impact on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
