Defensively, he stayed low in his stance with good flexibility and was sure with the glove. He was quick twitch, dropping down to block in front, and threw on-line with some life to second. He sat in the 2.1 range consistently and will continue to improve with added arm strength. Overall - Garcia is an intriguing guy that has another two years to strengthen for next level play.

12/20/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Garcia continues to show solid tools behind and at the plate. At the plate is where he continues to show best through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through an aggressive swing path. He has strength in his swing and a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to level out swing path and work to stay inside the ball more. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Behind the plate, feet work in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times were in the 2.4 range with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to improve / develop. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

09/22/2012 - Pitching/Catching Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Darrius is young catcher with developing physical tools behind the plate. He is a high energy guy who want to continually learn and be challenged. Behind the dish Darrius has soft hands and a quick release, as he is very efficient with his footwork and exchange. With continued improvement in his strength and flexibility Darrius will see great improvements in all of his tools grades. He has a good understanding of what he needs to do behind the plate and with continued athletic development his tools will really shine. Darrius is an extremely hard worker who will develop nicely over time.

09/15/2012 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Commuter) (Ages 14-18) Darrius is solid hitter, and will only improve with size and strength. Darrius did many things very well during the weekend. His set up and stride and load is solid with great consistency, and also he shows very good rhythm during the stance, stride and load, and also the swing. He also does a great job of utilizing the entire body during the swing. Darrius also displayed very good top hand use and control, with solid barrel delivery, and also very good extension thru the baseball. One big thing that Darrius needs to work on is not allowing his bat to wrap; at times he tends to let the bat get wrapped behind his head causing a longer slower swing. If he shortens the hands in the load he will notice a much shorter hand path during the swing, also he will see some more pop in the swing as well. He also tends to let his hips drift forward at times to start the swing, this causes him to struggle tracking the baseball at times, and also this will speed up the fastball. Focus on allowing the body to stay 50-50 over top the middle of the lower half. But with some natural growth, and more strength he will do nothing but improve.

07/27/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Darrius Garcia is a solid 2016 graduate who catches. Behind the plate Darrius receives with soft/clean hands, has a squared set up, efficient footwork, deadens the ball when blocking, and has a quick and clean release. At the plate Darrius has a balanced set up, smooth load, short stride, and uses his lower half well. He has average bat speed for his age and makes consistent contact at the plate while having a good approach as he showed during the camp games. With 4 years to further develop, Darrius shows abilities with room for improvement.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
