Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Floyd continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. He threw his lowest pop time to date at 1.87 as he displays life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he topped out at 87 mph. Fastball showed a range of 83-87 mph. Off speed pitches show potential as being quality out pitches at the next level. At the plate, Dawson shows plus barrel accuracy with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he displays a positive attitude and plays hard.

10/02/2011 - College PREP - North Little Rock, AR Dawson is a very talented C/RHP with a solid build. Behind the plate, he shows a good, low target, is quick to block and surrounds the ball. He is quick and active and gets rid of the ball to 2B improving yet again on his pop times, now as low as 1.90. He has a very strong arm with throws displaying life and carry. On the mound, Floyd shows 3 well above average pitches with his FB topping out at 85 mph. Smoother rhythm and better separation will only help impressive pitching numbers. At the plate, he takes the barrel directly to the ball, hitting line-drives and using all fields. Dawson has a ton of ability and has a bright future in the game.

05/30/2010 - College PREP - Springdale (Fayetteville), AR Dawson is a stocky 2-way player that continue to make improvements both behind the plate and on the mound. Dawson lowered his pop times from 2.1 - 2.25 to 2.02 - 2.15 at the Springdale workout. Defensively, Dawson has a low approach, he looks the ball in, and has quiet actions. Dawson improved his blocking grade from 42 to 48 as he centers the ball well and covers the "5" hole. When throwing, Dawson gains ground well, gets rid of the ball quickly, and delivers it accurately to 2nd base. A wider base, improved angles when blocking, and added arm strength all will help Dawson improve as he continues to grow and mature. On the mound, Dawson repeats his delivery and has good glove side lead. He keeps his eyes to his target, has good direction, and he keeps consistent arm speed with his pitches. More backside, follow through, and lower 1/2 explosion will help numbers on the mound improve. At the plate, Dawson has good balance and a good set-up. He is a contact hitter, with a line drive approach that can work the ball to all fields. Hitting can get better if Dawson can let the ball travel deeper, keep his hips closed, and use more lower 1/2.

10/28/2009 - Arizona Fr/So Fall Classic - 2009 Floyd continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.63 runner. Arm strength has improved to solid average as he topped out at 84 mph on the mound. Fastball showed a range of 82-84 mph as he competes and shows a solid mound presence. At the plate, Dawson made hard contact and was 2 for 8 with a 2B.

07/31/2009 - Pirate City World Series - Session 1 Dawson is a young, 2013 graduate that shows as a two-way player as a catcher and RHP with a small, solid body. Foot speed is below average and he needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. Hands and feet work well together through the throwing process displaying a quick release. Pop times are in the 2.10-2.25 range with a means of 2.15. Receiving and blocking skills are slightly above average and show potential of being quality tools at the next level. Arm strength is slightly above average and he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to build more arm strength, raising velocities. At the plate, hitting abilities and power are slightly above average. Swing path is long due to arm bar created in the load with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 76-78 mph with run on a downhill plane creating tough angles on hitters. Off speed pitches are slightly above average, showing potential at the next level is better command is developed. With 4 years to further develop, Floyd has a ton of potential as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
