Official Scouting Report

10/18/2017 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Dean continues to show the makings of a special type player at the next level. In the OF, actions are smooth, clean, and quick. He reads balls well off the bat and utilizes his athletic feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles. Range is a plus as he covers a lot of ground. He works behind the baseball and plays through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together in getting rid of the baseball quickly with well above average arm strength with throws showing life and on line carry. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. Hands are quick (82 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He has strength and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 75-77 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with fading action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with early break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. He maintains good composure and competes on the bump. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

04/09/2017 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Dean is a strong, athletic RHP/OF who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.28. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying solid hitting abilities with well above average power potential. Hands are quick and work to and through an aggressive swing path, creating extension. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. In the OF, he displays smooth / clean actions. He utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles and utilizes two hands well through the fielding process. He is aggressive but needs to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Range is a plus as he utilizes his foot speed to cover a lot of ground. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. Fastball showed a range of 71-73 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with slight tailing action and shows a solid feel for pitch. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Dean has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
