07/27/2016 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 17U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Dean is a big 2 way player, who plays athletically for his size. Offensively, Dean is a force at the plate, with his tall open setup, to accompany his fluid rhythm and very quick hands, he has big time power to his pull side. At first he shows solid foot work and glove work, moving fluidly around the bag and showing a proficiency for picking balls out of the dirt. Taking varied ground ball reps from his backhand and on slow rollers will sure up his game at first. On the mound, he throws 3 pitches from his over the top arm angle, featuring a running fastball, an 11-5 curveball and a changeup that shows well. Mechanically, a slower tempo and a more defined balance point will help consistency in strike throwing. Overall a hard working, solid player, Dean has game changing power that will certainly translate to the next level.

01/10/2016 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Dean is a talented 2-way player (RHP/1B) who has a tall/strong build (6'4"/225). He has worked hard and come a long way since we last saw him in 2011. On the mound, this righty pounds the zone with strikes. He works to a tall balance point, has smooth separation and drives downhill off of the rubber. FB cracks the mitt topping out at 83 mph as he works it to both sides of the plate. Slider has 11/5 shape - 71-74 mph. He finishes complete out over his front side. Continuing to develop his off-speed pitches will help to improve effectiveness on the mound. At 1B, Dean is a big target who can get to anything thrown his way. He is sure handed, can go get it and pick it with a soft mitt. Offensively, this strong righty shows a balanced setup with patience. He takes an aggressive hack at pitches he likes, connecting with pop and driving the ball to the gaps. Dean has a ton of upside and will make things happen in a variety of ways on the diamond.

07/19/2011 - Interactive Video Program - Carrollton (DFW), TX Dean is a solid RHP / 1st baseman with a big frame. On the mound, Dean has a sound, effortless delivery, a loose arm action, and good mound presence. He works in good rhythm, keeps his shoulders level, and he has good direction toward home plate. Dean keeps a still head, he lands sound, and he finishes off his pitches well. Defensively, Dean has soft hands, fluid feet, and he works around the bag well. He centers the ball well, fields in an athletic position, and his exchange is quick and clean. Dean has a long / loose arm action, and he throws with okay accuracy to his target. At the plate, Dean has a square / athletic set-up, a proper load, and a short / square stride. He has good balance, fast bat speed, and he makes hard contact. Dean stays behind the ball well, he swings in good rhythm, and he gets his lower 1/2 through. Overall abilities can improve if Dean can work on the following. Pitching 1. Earlier separation 2. Lengthen back arm action Defense 1. Quicken feet 2. Long toss Offense 1. More direct hands to ball 2. Shorten swing

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
