09/16/2017 - 2017 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures East A legit two-way prospect, Derek showed well at the plate, in the outfield and on the mound. As a hitter, he has very good feel for the barrel with natural actions, and a short, repeatable stroke. Defensively he reads and reacts to balls well taking good angles and making plays in all three outfield spots. He has enough arm to play right. On the mound Derek ran his fastball up to 89 mph with some late life, and he spun his breaking ball well. Add in good feel for a change, and you have the quality 3-pitch mix that he showcased in this game outing that included him striking out the final four batters he faced.

01/15/2016 - Baseball Factory All-America Pre-Season Rookie Tournament Derek is an athletic two-way player that is a LHP/OF. On the mound, he displays a 3 pitch mix with is FB ranging between 76-79MPH. Crum gathers over the rubber, separation is on time, and he rotates to his target well. His arm works well but he does have the tendency to open and fall glove side. Just a small area to focus on. Defensively, Derek shows good range and routes to the baseball. His arm is accurate as he plays behind and through the ball. At the plate, he displayed a level swing path with good use of his hips and core. Crum showed the ability to spray the ball to all fields. He can continue to work on letting the ball get deeper and also more flexion in his lead arm. Only a 2019 grad, Crum is a special athlete who has a bright future in this game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
