10/09/2024 - Arizona Freshman Fall Classic (2028) Derek Finney is a well-rounded prospect with strong offensive and defensive abilities, showcased during the Arizona Freshman Fall Classic. Defensively, Derek demonstrates solid footwork and a strong understanding of positioning, making him a reliable presence at both first base and the outfield. While his agility could use some improvement, his accurate arm allows him to make smart, on-target throws, contributing to his overall defensive value. At the plate, Derek shows excellent bat-to-ball skills. He is disciplined and rarely strikes out, which speaks to his ability to make consistent contact and put the ball in play. Derek had a strong weekend offensively, drawing two walks and collecting three hits, including an infield single, which demonstrates his hustle and ability to beat out plays. His overall approach at the plate is solid, and as he continues to refine his swing mechanics and strength, his offensive game has the potential to become even more impactful. Overall, Derek Finney is a reliable and hardworking player with a bright future. His consistency at the plate, combined with his strong fundamentals defensively, makes him a valuable asset to the team. With continued development in agility and power, Derek has the potential to evolve into a well-rounded contributor at the next level.

08/04/2024 - National Showcase - Greensboro, NC Derek is a tall, lean 1B who is a prospect on the diamond. At 1B, he shows smooth / fluid actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are clean and presents well out front. He moves well laterally with range increasing as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he continues to shine, through a squared setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. With 4 years to further develop, Derek has a lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to progress his game.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
