10/09/2019 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Derek continues to show as a top prospect on the diamond. At SS, he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active as attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate, with zip (90 mph velocity) across the diamond. At the plate, he continues to shine through a wide setup. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and works through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

01/18/2019 - 2019 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek is a lean built SS/3B prospect who has a talented game. In the field, Derek plays with active footwork and agile actions. He presents his glove and fields the ball in a square position. Derek has a clean exchange leading into a short arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. His throws are accurate with good carry across the diamond. As a left-handed hitter, Derek has an open setup with low hands. He has controlled rhythm with a simple load and short stride. Derek has good hip and hand coordination as he uses his lower half throughout his swing path. He shows fast bat speed and is developing a consistent bat path. Derek has the ability to drive the ball to the pull side with power. Overall, Derek has a feel for the game and potential to get even better.

10/24/2018 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Derek is a coachable SS/3B prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the SoCal Classic. In the field, Derek shows active footwork and is agile moving to the ball. He gets into an athletic position and fields the ball out in front with soft hands. He makes a quick exchange and gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them consistently on-line to his target. At the plate, this LHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a short stride. He is smooth getting into his load and hits from a strong front side. He takes a short swing with decent bat speed which leads to loud contact and gap to gap pop. Overall, Derek is a talented prospect who should find success in this, his junior season.

09/30/2018 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Derek is an athletic SS prospect who will graduate in 2020. In the field, Derek shows active footwork and covers ground well. He gets into a low position and fields the ball out in front. He makes a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them consistently on-line to his target. Derek can improve defensively by attacking the ball more aggressively. At the plate, this LHH sets up in a tall stance and takes his stride on time. He works to barrel up the baseball and drives the ball to his pull side. Derek can improve as a hitter by taking a shorter swing to the ball. Overall, Derek is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
