08/09/2021 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Rochester, NY Derek is a 1B/RHP prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the diamond. In the field, Derek gets into a square position and fields the ball out in front with a firm glove. His exchange is quick and he makes accurate throws to his target. At the plate, this switch hitter sets up in an athletic stance and takes a square stride. He gets back into his load and generates fast bat speed through the zone, producing loud line drives. On the mound, Derek operates with a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 74mph with arm side run. Changeup sits from 66-69mph with sinking action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. Overall, Derek is a solid prospect who has the potential to further build upon his skills on the field.

04/25/2021 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Binghamton, NY Derek is a 1B/RHP prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the diamond. In the field, Derek shows fluid footwork and moves well laterally. He gets into an athletic position and fields with a firm glove. His exchange is clean and he gets rid of the ball quickly, making accurate/on-line throws through his target. At the plate, this switch hitter sets up in an athletic stance and takes a square stride. He is smooth to load and generates fast bat speed through the zone, producing strong line drives. On the mound, Derek gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works inline toward the plate and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Derek operates with a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 70mph with tailing action. Changeup sits from 60-63mph with sinking action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. Overall, Derek is a solid prospect who has the potential to further build upon his skills on the field.

09/13/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Troy (Albany), NY Derek continues to work hard on his skills on the diamond. Offensively, this switch hitter shows similarly from both sides through a tall/open stance. He has rhythm to load, whips the barrel and squares it up, hitting line-drives. At 1B, he shows active pre-pitch movement and comes to get the GB. He tracks pitches into his glove and gathers well. On the mound, he throws a FB and CH with his FB now topping out at 70 mph. He has smooth separation and repeats his delivery well. Holmes has upside with still time to progress.

08/10/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Geneva, NY Derek continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is clean but needs to present more out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. Throws are accurate with carry but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he continues to show as a switch hitter but projects as a LHH where he has improved the most. Hands are loose and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 69 mph. His 2 seam shows good arm side run and stays down in the zone. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but throws too hard, resembling fastball. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches.

06/04/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Troy (Albany), NY Derek is a tall, strong SS/RHP. Defensively at SS, he takes a prep step and works into a low/square fielding position. He turns smooth DP's with a clean exchange and accurate throws to his target. On the mound, this RHP gathers over the rubber and works downhill. He delivers from a 3/4 arm slot, stays directional and finishes strong towards home plate. With the stick, Derek shows an athletic setup and gets back into a load. He rips his lower 1/2 through and drives pitches with hard contact back up through the middle of the field. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
