01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek continues to shine on the diamond. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He has the versatility to play all 3 OF spots effectively. At the plate, he shows a squared set. He stands in with a solid/strong base and has fluid rhythm to load. Barrel delivery is short/quick with aggression (85 mph exit velocity) as he connects through a line drive approach.

08/02/2017 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Derek is a strong, athletic built outfield prospect who plays the game hard with above average talent. As a right-handed hitter, Derek has a tall, closed stance with a centered balance and firm front side. He has smooth rhythm with a good load and square stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. Derek has fast bat speed with a short, direct swing path. He is a line drive type hitter who has the ability to drive the ball to each gap with power. In the outfield, Derek plays with effective pre-pitch actions showing quick, active footwork with agile body control. He can cover some ground with a 6.68 60 yard dash time. He attacks the baseball and fields it in a high position with a firm glove. He has clean exchange leading into a long arm action throwing from an over the top arm slot. Derek plays with good momentum through the baseball showing strong throws. Overall, Derek is a talented prospect who can impact the game from either side of the ball giving him high upside to make a difference at the next level.

03/12/2017 - College PREP - Voorhees, NJ Derek is a lean, athletic OF who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying well above average hitting / power potential through an open setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He attacks the baseball, whipping the bat through the zone and creates extension. He has strength and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. In the OF, he displays smooth / athletic actions. He utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles and utilizes two hands well through the fielding process. He works to get behind balls and plays through well. Range is a plus as he reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Derek has the makings of a special type player with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
