At the plate, he has a good setup and load. Quiet head that tracks the ball into the barrel. Does a good job keeping his weight in the center of his body. Direct swing plane. Works gap-to-gap for power. Exit velo up to 91mph. Derek is a very talented prospect that will have the opportunity to play at the next level.

09/13/2020 - National Evaluation and Tryout - Troy (Albany), NY Derek is a pure catch and throw backstop who has a promising future on the diamond. Behind the dish, he presents a soft/sure mitt showing great pocket awareness sticking pitches. Quick lateral movements allow him to center/deaden pitches in the dirt off of a soft chest. Runners will not want to test his cannon for an arm (86 mph velocity) with impressive pop times of 2.00. At the plate, he shows an open setup with rhythm. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He makes consistent contact through a line drive approach with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek is an athletic C/3B prospect who showed well at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. Behind the plate, Derek sits in an athletic stance and tracks the ball into his glove well. He replaces his feet to throw and keeps his throws on the proper side of the 2B bag. He is efficient moving to block and centers the ball in the middle of his body. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a crouched stance and takes a soft stride. He gets into a simple load and takes a compact swing, leading to solid line drives. Overall, Derek is a talented prospect who should find success going into his sophomore season.

He shows a solid setup and presents a low target. He utilizes his body well through the blocking process, centering balls well out front. At the plate, hitting abilities have improved through an athletic setup. He has fluid rhythm while getting good hand separation. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel through a line drive approach.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
