Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

11/15/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Marlborough (Boston), MA Derek continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the OF, defensive abilities are solid as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He work to get behind and play through with momentum to his target. At the plate, he continues to shine, displaying well above average hitting abilities with outstanding power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (86 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 75 mph. Fastball shows good arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sink and shows a feel for pitch. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

12/27/2019 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 (Ages 14-18) Derek is a tall and young LHP/OF that will graduate in 2023. On the mound, Derek shows a 3-pitch mix with a FB, CB, and CH. The FB shows AS run, the CB has 2-8 shape with some bite, and the CH shows some sink. Pitching, he shows confidence every time that he steps onto the mound. He gathers over the rubber well taking a relaxed knee lift as he separates with a quick arm action. He keeps his stride in line landing under control as he delivers the ball to the plate. Getting a little more extension out in front of his body will allow him to be more effective. In the OF, Derek shows the ability to make the routine play on the ball. He fields the ball out in front of his body with a firm glove as he makes a clean exchange and makes accurate throws to the infield. At the plate, Derek shows a square and tall setup as he gets his foot down on time getting his lower half through. He shows the ability to hit the ball to all fields and can handle the inside pitch well. Derek worked hard at Pirate City and shows the want to get better, we look forward to seeing his progress.

11/17/2019 - College PREP - Marlborough (Boston), MA Derek is a tall LHP/OF prospect who will graduate in 2023. On the mound, he shows a quality three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 73mph with arm side run. Derek gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and extends through his release, staying in line towards the plate. Breaking ball sits from 62-63mph with 1-7 break. Changeup sits from 67-68mph with sinking action and is thrown with fastball arm speed, making it a very effective pitch. A little tighter rotation on his breaking ball could make it even more effective at higher levels. In the field, Derek shows active footwork and covers ground well. He gets into an athletic position and fields the ball out in front of his body. He makes a clean exchange and keeps his throws accurate and on-line to his target. Derek can improve defensively with a long toss program to build up his arm strength. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a square stance and takes a square stride. He is smooth getting back into his load and hits against a strong front side. He swings with intent and sprays the ball to all fields. A slightly shorter swing path with more rhythm should lead to more consistent hard contact in the future. Overall, Derek is a solid overall prospect with a bright future and a high ceiling on the mound.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
