12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Derek is an outstanding kid that is a plus worker and plays the game hard. He continues to show as a RHP/OF but currently projects best in the OF for the next level. He utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles and is where he is supposed to be on every play as he backs up bases well. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind balls more, play through with momentum, and increase foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Russell shows an athletic setup and aggressive approach. Hands are quick, and work through level swing path. He makes consistent contact, showing a feel for the barrel with ball jumping off when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. At the event, he was 3 for 7. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 73-76 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength.
