01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek is a talented outfield prospect who has a well-rounded skill set and continues to progress his game. As a right-handed hitter, Derek has an open stance with a centered balance. He has fluid rhythm with his load and takes a square stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. Derek flashes fast bat speed with quick hands and an on-plane swing path showing hard, consistent contact. He has a solid approach and drives the ball to the pull side. In the outfield, Derek plays with effective pre-pitch actions and the correct angles to cover good ground. He fields the ball squarely and has a clean exchange. Derek has a long arm action throwing from a high 3/4 slot. He is working to play through the baseball and build his arm strength. Overall, Derek has good upside and the ability to impact a program on both sides of the ball.

12/27/2015 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Smith is a two-way 2019 grad that played SS/RHP at Pirate City. Defensively at short, Derek shows efficient footwork with good body control as he attacks the baseball and flashes lateral range. Smith plays through the ball properly keeping his momentum working through to the target and shows proper backhand technique and will quicken release by avoiding a glove pat habit. On the mound, Derek works quickly and keeps his athleticism present from SS to the rubber. Gathering and loading more in the balanced position and keeping the directionality in-line to the target to avoid falling off will be beneficial to Smith on the mound. As a hitter, Derek shows rhythm in the box to go along with a quiet set up and square stride, activated hands, and balance. Smith tracks the baseball well which allows him to utilize the whole field in his approach while staying aggressive on the fastball. With years ahead to work on a strength and conditioning and throwing program, this two-way player's stock will continue to rise as a result of his hard-working attitude.

06/30/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Rindge, NH Derek continues to show as an impressive cold weather RHP/SS with a great athletic frame. Offensively, he attacked the baseball with a direct barrel and was loose through the zone with fluidity. He had a level path, stayed in the middle with his approach and was simple/compact. All signs point to his ability to hit at a high level with simplicity to mechanics, feel to hit, and fluidity. At short, he works efficient/tight angles to field the baseball with a sure glove. He has a tendency to get deep at times, and needs to continue to work on getting further in front. On the mound, he ran his FB from 78-80, spun an 11/5 CB from 66-67, threw a CH with some feel from 65-67, and flashed a KN with some dance at 57-59. Mechanically, he was loose/free and controlled with his actions allowing him to repeat. As a 7.08 runner, Derek is an all around athlete that projects at either spot with continued work over the next 4 years of high school.

01/16/2015 - Baseball Factory All-America Pre-Season Rookie Tournament Derek is a young SS with a bright future in the game. In the infield he fields out front of his body with sure hands, takes good angles, and he has good body control. He has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws across the diamond. At the plate he has a smooth load, good balance, and makes consistent contact. He has an advanced approach for his age and sees a lot of pitches. He has quick bat speed and flashed gap to gap power during BP and games.

12/14/2014 - National Tryout - Lewiston, ME Derek is an SS/RHP that projects more as a SS. He looks the part with an athletic body and room to fill. As a middle infielder, he gets himself together well before the pitch and fields the ball out front. His backhand is one of his strengths as well as his ability to give accurate/efficient feeds on the DP. Derek hits from the right side with a square stance and strong lower 1/2. He continues to improve his offensive ratings as a player and has time on his side. On the bump, Derek throws from a hi 3/4 arm slot with good arm action. He delivers the ball quick and has a great feel for his Knuckle ball. Continuing to work on his skills as a RHP and developing strength will take his abilities to the next level.

07/25/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Derek is a talented two way player that plays SS and also pitches. In the infield he has quick feet, fields with soft / sure hands, and showed good range. He is aggressive to the ball using the proper footwork with his approach. At the plate he has a smooth load, strong balance, and he uses his lower half well. He has great barrel accuracy and consistently hit line drives in the gaps during BP and games. On the mound Derek works fast and pounds the zone with his fastball and curve. He knows the importance of getting ahead of hitters as he threw a lot of first pitch strikes and kept hitters off balance with his fast / curve mix.

02/17/2014 - Interactive Video Program - Rindge, NH Derek is a talented 2-way player (SS/RHP) who can swing the stick. Offensively, he stands in well with an aggressive approach. He delivers the barrel with plus bat speed and hard line-drives. At SS, Smith is fundamentally sound with clean actions. He makes the plays and has a quick exchange to throw. On the bump, he throws 2 pitches from a 3/4 arm slot. He stays directional and delivers with a free arm action. Breaking ball is best pitch as it has tight spin and he has plus command. Overall abilities will improve with work on the following.

1. Extension
2. Lower 1/2
Defense
1. Field out in front
2. Follow DP flips
Pitching
1. Arm strength

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
