06/15/2018 - USA Baseball 17U Championships This athletic MIF shows a tremendous future on the diamond. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a tremendous runner at 6.60. Defensively, he takes a quick first step and has plus lateral range. He creates angles around the GB with fluid actions but does need to attack balls more and play through with his body. DP turns are quick with zip (84 mph velocity) on his throws and he shows big play potential. At the plate, he continues to shine through a tall setup. Hands are quick and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields and shows a feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. Mental makeup is outstanding as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be. Derek has a ton of upside and possesses the skill-set that will play at a very high level.

01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek is a projectable (6'1”, 165) two-way player who continues to hone his skills on the field. At short, his rhythm and athleticism give him good range to both sides as he plays through the ball while fielding out front. Hands are clean and quick and arm is accurate to turn the DP. He is a tough out with the bat, showing an efficient swing with a fast bat through the zone. His level path and strong lower half lead to consistent line drive contact will pull pop. On the mound, he pounds the zone with his fastball/curveball mix to stay ahead of hitters. His pitches show good action and he keeps hitters off balance by moving the ball around. Derek can get it done at multiple positions on the field and is an exciting player to watch.

10/28/2017 - 2017 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures West Derek had a good showing at the BF UA Futures West event. His athletic 6'1" frame is wiry strong and quick twitch, allowing him to put his tools to good use on the field. Defensively, Derek is smooth and confident with sure hands and efficient feet. He reads balls well off the bat and takes good angles with natural IF actions. His exchange and release are clean with enough arm to play multiple spots. As a hitter Derek has loose hands and a quick stroke. His path is geared to line drives and he is comfortable using the whole field. When his legs keep him level through contact he centers the ball with regularity. Overall, Derek shows an excellent feel for the game to match his physical abilities - the combination you look for in a SS.

06/16/2017 - USA Baseball 17U Championships Derek continues to progress and show well on the diamond. Defensively, he shows his athleticism with quick/fluid footwork as he is aggressive to come and get the GB. Hands are soft/sure as he works through the ball, gains ground toward 1B and has a smooth transfer to throw. At the plate, this righty shows a balanced setup with rhythm to load. Swing is level/repeatable as he squares the ball up and hits line-drives. On the mound, Derek commands the zone and throws all 3-pitches for strikes. He maintains fluid rhythm/tempo and works in-line toward the dish. Separation is smooth as he repeats well. FB still sits in the low 80's while showing some tailing action. Changeup compliments his FB well as he throws it with the same arm speed, helping to create some deception. Trobough has a solid all-around skill-set with upside as he continues to fill out and build strength.

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek is a talented SS/RHP prospect who has good upside and graduates in 2019. Offensively, Derek has a square setup with good, centered balance. He has fluid rhythm and uses his lower half throughout his swing. He has a long, level swing path. Derek is a line drive hitter who produces solid contact to the pull side. In the field, Derek has effective pre-pitch actions and takes the correct angles to cover good ground. He fields the ball in a low position with a firm glove. Derek plays with momentum through his release and throws from a 3/4 slot. On the mound, Derek pitches downhill and competes with all his full arsenal. He has a balanced delivery throwing from a high 3/4 slot. Derek works the ball in and out featuring a fastball with good tailing movement. He throws a deceptive changeup with good movement too. Derek is a well-rounded prospect who has good potential as he continues to progress his talents with maturity.

12/27/2016 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Derek is a tall, lean SS/RHP prospect with exciting tools and potential and the work ethic to become a player at the next level. His control on the mound is extremely impressive, as he locates his fastball to both sides of the plate with ease to work ahead of hitters. He gets to a strong balance point on the mound to stay in sync and keeps his release point consistent, which leads to his plus command. He is quick to the plate and shows excellent poise while battling each hitter, which coupled with his fastball, changeup mix, gives him closer attributes. At short, he shows fluid actions with quick feet to give himself range to both sides. His hands are soft to field and quick to transfer and he creates positive angles to throw and cut down the distance to his target. At the dish, he presents a tough out for pitchers with a good idea of the strike zone and a patient approach. He does incorporate his lower half well to generate power and gets extension through contact to show the ability to hit the ball hard. Shortening up his swing will lead to more consistent, hard contact moving forward. Derek is a very exciting, young prospect who already has the look of a collegiate level player.

09/25/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Derek continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a tremendous future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.25. Defensive abilities in the MIF are now excellent, displaying smooth / fluid actions. He shows proper footwork as he works around balls and plays through with his body. He moves well laterally and displays soft / sure hands. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy and on line carry across the diamond, displaying outstanding arm strength. At the plate he improved his hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work to and through an aggressive approach, creating extension. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap to gap pop. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball coming off the bat a little differently. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 82 mph. He threw everything out of the stretch with fastball showing good arm side run. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a plus feel for pitch with arm side run. Offensively, he delivered the barrel on a level path and rotated his core to generate torque through the zone. He worked his backside through contact and has good upside with his coachability and aptitude. Derek also jumped on the bump to throw an inning, competing and striking out 1. All in all - Derek is gaining ground, developing both his athleticism and skill on the diamond.

Swing is short/direct as he connects and hits line-drives to all parts of the field. On the bump, this righty repeats his delivery well. FB now tops out at 70 mph as he works both sides of the plate. Curveball has 11/5 shape with his CH showing to be his best off-speed pitch. Getting more glove-side lead and finishing with more extension on his follow through will help to improve his skills on the bump. Derek has worked hard and molded himself into a solid prospect.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
