06/29/2016 - 2016 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National South Derek is an impressive young two-way prospect who is an absolute difference maker with a bat in his hands. At the plate, he uses his strong frame to generate big raw power and does a good job of bringing that power to game situations. He has very quick hands and a direct nbat path to get to and smoke any pitch he likes. In the outfield, Derek has a strong arm with carry and good accuracy to his target. He is light on his feet and covers a ton of ground, making very difficult plays. On the mound, Derek is a strike thrower with a nice arm stroke and a compact, repeatable delivery. He has sound mechanics and can get hitters out with any of his three pitches. This is a talented prospect who continues to impress no matter what field he's on.

01/15/2016 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Derek showed strictly as a 6'2/205 lbs OF at this event with Baseball Factory. Defensively, he worked with a sure glove to make plays, getting to his fielding position on-time. He had a clean exchange and a quick release to throw, hitting his cut-off nicely. Offensively, he generated good bat speed with his direct path and rotated his core to help generate torque and pop. He used the entire field with his approach and he will find himself more consistent with line-drive contact as he gets more top hand extension. Derek also showed an aggressive mentality on the base paths, moving well 1st to 3rd. In all - Derek is in great shape heading into his sophomore spring with feel for the glove and the barrel.

09/30/2015 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Derek is an athletic OF/RHP that will graduate in 2018 with a promising future on the diamond. Currently, he projects slightly better in the OF but has an upside on the mound. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time. In the OF, defensive abilities are well above average, displaying smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He reads well off the bat and works to get behind balls to play through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together and he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and displaying gap to gap power as he shows plus barrel accuracy. Power potential is outstanding as the ball comes off his bat a little different. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-81 mph with arm side run and late life. Off speed pitches show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, locating to both sides of the plate. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude, works hard, and his a student of the game. With 3 years to further develop, Derek has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the top collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
