02/22/2009 - College PREP - Rocky Mount, NC Deric is a young two way player on the mound and in the OF with a tall, thin frame that shows projection as it continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best in the OF where he has abilities. Foot speed is near above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time and utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in tracking down balls by taking proper routes and angles. He shows a low approach in coming to get and playing through ground balls but needs to work to get behind fly balls more to play through with momentum to target. Defensive abilities are solid average. Arm strength is solid average from a low arm slot. He needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength and raise velocities. Footwork to throw will also aid in providing more carry on throws. At the plate, Grant has average abilities with near average power. Swing path is level and works to keep hands inside the baseball, utilizing all fields. He has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential but will improve quickly with instruction and adjustments at the plate. On the mound, abilities are average. Changeup is his best off speed pitch showing a solid feel for with run and sinking action. He did not show a breaking ball but throws a split finger that is average. Stock on the mound will rise if more arm strength is developed. With 2 years to further develop, Deric has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.
