10/09/2013 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Derick continues to show solid abilities in his game. He is aggressive and works to get into a square fielding position. He gathers well and has a clean exchange, turning the DP smoothly. Working on his footwork while fielding the backhand will help defensive skills improve. When Derick got on the mound, he took control of the game. He works at his tempo and holds runners on 1B well. He drives off the rubber, using his lower 1/2 well and works in-line toward the dish. CB is best pitch and will be more effective as he throws it more. As a hitter, Derick lets the ball travel in the zone and hits it where it's pitched. He gets good hip rotation and drives from his backside. Leaman is an athlete as has the ability to make the necessary adjustments to his game.

08/04/2013 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha, NE), IA Derick is a lean, athletic RHP/SS that will graduate in 2014. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.03 60 time. He utilizes his quick feet well in his lateral movement, displaying range in the MIF. Actions are fluid as he attacks ground balls and plays through well, displaying clean / quick hands. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he presents his hands well out front. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with throws displaying life, accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path, creating extension. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed range of 78-81mphon a downhill plane. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with slight early break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. Derick has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
