02/24/2013 - College PREP - Sioux Falls, SD Derrick has a thick/projectable build and is a two way player - LHP/1B. He is very effective on the mound, throwing three pitches for strikes. His curve-ball has 12/6 shape and sharp action, while his change-up has run and sink. His fastball has run and sink with late and heavy action, but the velocity is low. Increasing his arm strength will also allow for greater effectiveness of his off-speed pitches. Offensively, he has an athletic setup, smooth separation and pull side pop. He makes square contact with a line-drive swing path. Emphasizing staying through the ball at contact and finish every swing will allow for added power. Defensively, he has good footwork beginning with his prep-step. His arm his accurate, but he needs to present his glove earlier and get lower in his fielding position to secure the ball. In all, Derrick is a sound player that will be successful at first base, or on the mound at the next level, especially with added arm strength.
