Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

03/22/2015 - National Tryout - Greensboro, NC Byrd continues to progress in his skills. In the OF, he hustles and works into position behind the fly-ball. He is sure handed and secures the ball with 2-hands. At the plate, he has a repeatable swing through a level path. He connects and squares the ball up consistently. Driving his lower 1/2 and avoiding 'drifting' forward will help him to tap into more power potential. On the bump, Devyn shows fluid rhythm and works both sides of the plate. FB has run as he fills up the zone with strikes. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape (54-57 mph). He gets good extension on his follow through and finishes his pitches. This hard worker (2018 grad) still has a ton of time to get to where he wants to be.

07/28/2014 - National Tryout - Gaffney, SC Byrd continues to work hard on his game. At the plate, this RHH shows a well balanced approach with patience. Barrel delivery is quick and level through the zone as he connects and drives the ball. At SS, he actively works around the ground ball as he presents his glove out in front. He fields the ball cleanly with soft hands and gathers well. As only a 2018 grad - Devyn has skills that will continue to progress over the next few years.

03/30/2014 - National Tryout - Greensboro, NC Byrd continues to show as a RHP/OF but currently projects best in the OF for the next level where he has improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.69 runner. Defensive grade have improved as well, displaying clean / smooth actions. He utilizes his feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and plays through ground balls aggressively. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to get behind fly balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting and power grades have improved as well through a balanced setup. Hands are loose and he makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he learns to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 55-58 mph. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength, throws more strikes, and fixes some flaws in mechanics of the delivery.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Devyn is a great kid who works hard and always hustles on the field. As an outfielder he showed a good ready position, covers ground, and has sure hands. He needs to work on taking better angles to the ball and strengthen his arm. On the mound Devyn displayed a smooth delivery and good feel for his pitches. He needs to focus on staying in-line to target, keeping his front side closed and finish pitches. At the plate Devyn has good balance, swing path/ barrel accuracy and uses lower half well. Improvement can be made by not wrapping his bat, being more direct to the ball and increasing bat speed.

07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Vero Beach (Ages 12-14) Devyn showed an above average breaking ball in his latest Baseball Factory outing. On the bump, he has long arm action and gets good extension over his front side. He is able to repeat and has good control. His CB is his best pitch with 12/6 shape, but his cut FB for strikes gives way to that pitch. At short, he attacks the ball well with soft hands, and is a communicator/leader in the infield. Offensively, he shows good hands, barrel delivery and a good lower half. In all, Devyn is a projectable SS that is vocal and a leader.

04/21/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Greenville, SC Devyn is a thin, lanky, 2-way player who pitches and plays SS. On the mound, Devyn has a loose arm, level shoulders, and he gets good extension on his pitches. He has good direction toward home, he lands in a square position, and he finishes in a complete position. At SS, Devyn has firm hands, active footwork, and he delivers the ball with accuracy across the diamond. Offensively, Devyn has a square set-up, a short stride, and a level swing path. He makes consistency contact and he swings in good rhythm. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Eyes on target
2. Separation
3. Balance point
Defense
1. Long toss
2. Field out front
3. Play on balls of feet
Offense
1. Shorten swing
2. Lower 1/2
3. Load / Stride

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
