Official Scouting Report

06/21/2014 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Dustin put his talents on display out in Omaha. With the bat, this strong righty works back into a loaded position and waits for his pitch. Barrel is quick to and through the zone as he connects and drives the ball with pop. At SS, West shows quick footwork as he moves actively around the ground ball from right to left. He presents his glove out in front and fields the ball cleanly. Ball is quick/clean from glove to hand as he fires strong throws over to his target. Dustin also got on the mound for a few innings at the event. He shows a good mound presence with simple/repeatable mechanics. He competes and goes right at hitters, throwing strikes consistently. FB shows some arm-side run while breaking ball has 10/4 shape. A versatile player - Dustin shows his love for the game with his energy on the field and hard working mentality.

02/23/2014 - College PREP - Waco, TX Dustin is a lean, athletic SS/OF that will graduate this Spring. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 6.93 60 time. At SS, defensive abilities are outstanding as he utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in his laterally movement as he displays outstanding range in the MIF. He attacks balls, plays through while displays soft / clean hands as he makes the plays. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He reads balls well off the bat with defensive grades improving as he learns to get behind balls more, playing through with momentum to his target. Throws are accurate with carry but will benefit by continuing to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a direct / level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Dustin has potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
