Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/RHPPosition Projection

04/13/2014 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Dylan showed his consistent ability in his most recent Baseball Factory outing. Behind the dish, he sat well, had good body control, and was quick down to block. He deadened the ball in front with a soft chest and threw with some carry. He is sure handed and flashes good rhythm with some sway to receive. Offensively, he hit from a good base and with an accurate barrel. He uses the middle of the field and continues to show upside. On the mound, he throws three pitches side-arm - with coordination and loose actions. He stays direction and compact with his delivery and keeps his eyes on the target. In all - Dylan projects best as a backstop at the next level with strong defensive ability.

10/23/2013 - Arizona Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic Dylan continues to work hard at his game. Defensively behind the dish, he sits in well with a wide/solid base. He tracks the ball into his mitt. He lowered his pop time, now getting the ball down to 2B in 2.25. At the plate, he likes the pitch on the inner 1/2 and shows some pull side pop. He remains athletic and balanced throughout the swing. Working to drive his backside lower 1/2 will help to increase pop off of the barrel. Dylan is a hard worker who has the willingness to make adjustments and improve his game.

04/07/2013 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Dylan is a tall, solid, and athletic C/RHP that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best behind the plate for the next level. Feet are active as he works in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. Pop times show a range of 2.31-2.54 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Smith shows an athletic setup with rhythm. He loads well and attacks the ball with his hands through a short / direct, swing path, flashing bat speed. Power numbers will improve as he learns to load more and use his lower half. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 71-74 mph. Breaking ball displays sweeping action with slight break as he needs to work to stay on top of pitch. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with solid arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained and he works to throw more strikes with all his pitches. With 3 years to further develop, Dylan has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
