11/20/2011 - College PREP - Germantown, TN Ethan's foot speed continues to improve as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.33. Feet are active as he plays through balls and presents hands out front. He throws from multiple arm angles with carry and accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, hitting grades and power numbers have improved through an athletic, open setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through the ball at contact. Lower half works well through the swing with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He needs to work on keeping hands inside the ball to utilize all fields and get front foot down sooner to work on time to improve hitting grades. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 80-84 mph with arm side run and heavy action. Breaking ball and slider are similar displaying 10/4 shape with gradual break. Command / control have improved as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Ethan is a hard worker and continues to show improvements each time we see him.

08/03/2011 - Pirate City World Series 2011 - Session 1 Blount continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.52 runner. He will benefit by staying on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. He utilizes his feet well as he always is in a good fielding position with hands presented out front. Offensively, hitting grades and power numbers have improved through a solid setup. Hands work through a level swing path as he gets the barrel to the ball with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 5 for 11 with a 2B. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 82-84 mph with slight arm side run, though we have seen him top out at 86 mph at his first workout. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late bite and shows good mound presence. Ethan plays hard and has a strong understanding of the game as he is very coachable. He currently projects best as a pitcher for the next level but could help a team as a SS as well.

04/03/2011 - College PREP - Bartlett (Memphis), TN Ethan is a tall and athletic looking two-way player that will graduate in 2012. Defensively at shortstop, he shows above average actions with a good pre-pitch setup, a loose arm, and good accuracy and carry on his throws across the diamond. He has soft hands to go with a quick and clean exchange. He would benefit from lowering his approach to the ball, along with getting rid of the pat of the glove right before fielding it. Offensively he shows good balance, gets good extension and centers the ball well. He can work on a better load of his hands, getting his front foot down earlier and keeping his hands inside the baseball to help with going the other way. On the mound he throws his fastball with above average velocity, as he was 83-86 mph with good command. He also throws a cut fastball, curve ball and changeup to complete his repertoire. Developing his off speed pitches and finishing off his pitches will help get him down in the zone and improve his stock on the mound. Ethan has the potential to help a college in need of a pitcher and/or SS.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
