Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

07/28/2017 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Fernando increased radar velocity and control on the mound during his time at Pirate City. His FB was clocked at 76 MPH. On the mound, Fernando keeps his eyes on target, he repeats his delivery, and works in good rhythm. He gets good extension on his pitches and shows good poise on the hill. At 1B, Fernando keeps the ball in front of his body and fields in an athletic position. Offensively, Fernando showed quick hands, solid balance, and fast bat speed. He is a line drive hitter with a direct barrel to the ball.

03/19/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Corpus Christi, TX Fernando continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities on the mound. Delivery is sound/repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 73 mph. Fastball showed a range of 71-73 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

07/14/2016 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 2 Fernando is an extremely hard working two-way prospect with a good idea on the field. On the mound, he has a two pitch mix including the curveball and a fastball that he can either cut or run. He has a compact, repeatable delivery with good arm action that allows him to get good action on his pitches. He has a 11-5 curveball with break that he can throw for strikes. At the plate, Fernando has a line drive, groundball approach, making consistent, hard contact and is a tough out. He has an efficient bat path and gets good rotation from his lower half to help get the bat through the zone. Leveling out his path will lead to more line drives to the outfield and help him get on base much more. Fernando is young player who continues to work hard every day to get better.

07/20/2014 - California Select Training & Competition (Ages 12-14) Fernando is a great kid with an attitude to match and is very coachable. On the mound he gathers well, gets good extension on finish and throws strikes. He needs to work downhill, keep elbow up and stay in-line to the target. As a fielder, Fernando showed a good pre-pitch position, first step and takes proper angles to the ball. Improvement can be made by getting arm angle up, long tossing for arm strength and increasing lateral quickness/agility. At the plate, Fernando displayed good hands, swing path and power but he needs to develop smoother stride/load, be more direct and extend through the ball on finish. Fernando has the right attitude and is willing to work hard, so if he continues on this path and makes the necessary adjustments, he can be a good player in the future.

07/08/2012 - Select Training at the All-Star Game (Pre HS) Fernando Hernandez is a 2018 graduate who plays 2nd base and also pitches. In the field Fernando has firm hands and has a controlled approach when fielding. He is consistent when making throws and follows his throws well. At the plate Fernando has a squared set up and keeps his hands back with his load. He uses his lower half and makes consistent contact. On the mound Fernando shows a fastball and a curveball that he keeps around the zone. He has a good idea on the mound and is a hard worker. He has natural sink on his fastball that could develop to even more with better leg drive. Overall, Fernando has good fundamentals and will only improve his game with more experience.

04/01/2012 - Interactive Video Program - San Antonio, TX Fernando is a young, average sized 2nd baseman with average size. Defensively, Fernando has sure hands, active feet and he takes good angles to the ball. He makes plays, his exchange is quick and clean, and he throws with accuracy from a short / loose arm with accuracy to his target. Offensively, Fernando has a square / athletic set-up, a short / square stride, and good balance. He has fast bat speed, he is short to the ball, and his swing is level. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Play more through ball
2. Get glove down sooner
3. Long toss
Offense
1. Let ball travel
2. Finish better

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
