07/10/2015 - California Select Training & Competition - Session 1 Fernando showed as a SS/RHP and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date but will benefit by continuing to increase foot quickness. At SS, he plays with a lot of energy as he is aggressive in working to square balls up. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he plays through balls more while presenting hands more out front. At the plate, he shows a squared / balanced setup and tracks the ball well. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will improve as he utilizes his lower half more and add overall body strength. At the event, he was 3 for 11. On the mound, he showed his top velocity to date, topping out at 56 mph. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength, works to throw more strikes, and develops better off speed pitch. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.

05/03/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Lakewood (Denver), CO Fernando is a young (2020 grad) 2-way player as a SS/RHP. Defensively at SS, he shows active footwork working well around the GB. He is sure handed, has a clean exchange to throw and makes accurate throws across the diamond. With the bat, this RHH shows a square setup with fluid rhythm. He lets the ball travel into the zone, swings on a level path and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. On the mound, Fernando throws his FB from an over the top arm slot. He works in-line toward the dish and repeats his mechanics well. FB ranges from 49-52 mph while his 2-seam shows slight run. He fills up the zone and throws strikes consistently. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
