11/12/2017 - College PREP - Wildomar (Los Angeles), CA Gabriel is an athletic built shortstop prospect who has a talented skill set on both sides of the ball. In the field, Gabriel plays with fluid, active footwork taking effective angles to cover good ground. He presents his glove and fields the ball in a low, athletic position. Gabriel has a quick, clean exchange leading into a loose arm action throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He plays with good momentum through the baseball showing strong, accurate throws across the diamond. Offensively, Gabriel has a square, athletic stance with a firm front side and centered balance. He has smooth rhythm with a good load and short, square stride as he uses his lower half throughout his swing. Gabriel shows fast bat speed with an on-plane swing path getting good extension at contact. He is a line drive type hitter who has a middle of the field approach. Overall, Gabriel is a talented prospect who has potential to make an impact at the next level.

11/13/2016 - College PREP - Riverside, CA Gabriel continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities, notably in his arm strength (now 78mph) and his hitting ability (7/10 hard hit balls). He is also a slick fielder at short with loose actions and advanced feel for the position. He shows active feet and gets low and square to field the ball while moving towards his target to shorten his throws. His exchange is clean and he has a quick release to make good DP feeds and throw accurately to his target. At the dish, this RHH shows great feel for the barrel with a direct to hand to the ball and quick wrists to whip the bat through the zone. He shows an efficient weight transfer to incorporate his lower half and generate bat speed. Shortening his stride will allow him to keep a stronger base to swing and will help improve his power. Gabriel is a very exciting, young prospect who we expect to see playing at the next level.

06/18/2016 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Gabriel is an athletic R/R MIF who works very hard on his skills day in and day out. He is very coachable and has a willingness to improve. He hustles at all times and that's something that cannot be taught. Defensively, he has quick/athletic actions and moves well pre-pitch ready to go right or left. He comes to get the ball, works through it well and has a quick exchange to throw. Turns of the DP are quick as he gets rid of it accurately to 1B. As a hitter - Alvarez has a square setup with good balance. He gets good hand separation on his load and tracks pitches into the zone and off of the barrel. Swing is level as he swings against a firm front side, working to engage his lower 1/2. He puts the ball in play consistently and battles at the plate. Only a 2018 grad - Gabriel has a solid all-around skill set with the mental makeup to get to where he wants to be.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
