10/30/2016 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Garrett continues to show improvements in his baseball skills with a bright future ahead of him on the diamond. He is already an excellent defensive catcher, especially in his blocking ability, turning himself into a wall behind the plate. He shows off athleticism at the position with lateral agility that allows him to get down easily and smother the ball, while also showing the footwork to catch and throw quickly to bases. He is quiet back there and funnels the ball to the center of his body to receive, presenting strikes to the umpire. At first, his feet work well, moving aggressively to field ground balls with his hands presented. He has range to his glove side and a quick release to throw, turning good double plays. He is a gap to gap hitter with a short path to the ball, making consistent, square contact. He gets good separation with his hands and has a powerful bat angle, extending his arms through contact to finish. Garrett is an exciting, young prospect with lots of potential on the field.

11/22/2015 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Garrett continues to get better each time we see him. His arm strength and subsequent times to 2B both improved at this workout. He had a pop time of 2.29 while continuing to show an accurate arm. He sits well behind the plate and has increased his blocking radius. At the plate, his added strength has translated into the ball coming off the bat with more authority. He is now showing the ability to drive the ball while maintaining his solid middle-of-the-field approach. Look for this young catcher to continue to make gains as he is only a 2018 grad and already has a strong 6-2/185 frame.

06/20/2015 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 McClain continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, he has improved his hitting grades through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. At the event, he was 4 for 12.Behind the plate, pop times were in the low 2.40 range. Times will continue to improve as builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

10/26/2014 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Garrett showed all-time bests with his velo (70), H-1B time, and projections as a hitter. Defensively, he does a superb job of making himself a large target, making it easy for pitchers to throw to. His strong wrists give him the ability to stick almost every pitch. At 1B, he is ready for the ball 24/7, squares up to the plate and gives 100% effort every play. Offensively, he showed a controlled, efficient load with his head down at contact. Tapping into more of his lower 1/2 and improving contact will take his hitting abilities to the next level. Garrett has a great personality for baseball and his hard work and determination will take him to the next level.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Garrett is a solid Catcher with good size behind the plate. He is a tough-nosed player who works extremely hard during games behind the plate. He receives the ball well, has a high IQ when calling pitches, and has the ability to block everything. He will take the next step in his advancement as a Catcher as he improves his arm strength and his exchange. Offensively, Garrett flashes good pop and is a smart hitter who continues to find himself in good hitters counts. He continues to improve his balance and direct hand path to the ball. Garrett is extremely coachable and has a ton of fun playing the game.

07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Vero Beach (Ages 12-14) Garrett is a big solid kid who catches. Behind the plate Garrett has firm hands, active feet, and blocks everything. He is a hard worker behind the plate and is a natural leader. At the plate he is a strong hitter with an athletic setup. He has a good load, short stride and uses his lower half well. He has fast bat speed and barrels up the baseball on a consistent basis. Shows the ability to be a gap to gap hitter with more power potential.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
