10/23/2013 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Garrett put his athleticism on display in SoCal. Defensively, he shows quick actions and works around the ball, moving from right to left and working from the ground-up. He shows plus range and can make the tough plays look easy. He has a clean exchange and can turn the DP. As a hitter, Smith has an athletic/simple approach with a good base. He delivers the barrel with quick hands, driving the ball on a line. Working on keeping his weight back and not drifting will immensely improve his abilities at the plate. At the event, he went 3 for 6 with 3 singles and 2 walks. He is a top of the line-up type of guy with his ability to get on base. Garrett is a talented player who will have success this upcoming season.

09/01/2013 - College PREP - Kansas City, MO Garrett is a solid, athletic 2B that will graduate in 2014. Foot speed is slightly above average as indicated by his 7.40 60 time. Feet are active / aggressive as attacks ground balls and plays through well, presenting soft / clean hands well out front. Lateral movement is a plus as he covers a lot of ground, displaying range. He shows big play potential on the right side of the IF. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but needs to work on getting rid of the baseball quicker and build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Smith shows a squared / athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path and show a solid feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. Garrett has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
