Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

01/18/2013 - 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Garry showed very well at 1st base, on the hill, and at the plate during his time at the UA Preseason. Defensively, Garry has sure hands, active feet, and he fields cleanly. He works around the ball, shows good range, and throws with carry and accuracy to his target. On the mound, Garry has a repeatable delivery, a loose arm, and he finishes in a complete position. At the plate, Garry has an open stance, a short stride, and good balance. He has fast bat speed, a level swing, and he gets his lower 1/2 through.

07/13/2012 - 2012 Team One South Showcase Garry is a tall, strong 1B/LHP that will graduate in 2013. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.11 60 time. Feet are active as he displays solid footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft / clean / sure as he consistently showed the ability to pick balls out of the dirt, saving throws. At the plate, Gwaltney continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are loose, quick, and strong as he generates outstanding bat speed. Swing path is level with solid barrel accuracy with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 3 for 4 and made solid barrel contact in all ABs. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 84-87 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball is a quality pitch, displaying 11/5 shape with sharp breaking action. He shows a solid feel for his changeup, displaying arm side run. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Garry has the makings to be a special type player and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
