07/10/2015 - 2015 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National East This athletic MIF continues to shine. Offensively, quick hands zip the barrel through the zone as he jumps of the first pitch he likes. The ball jumps off of his barrel with some pop as he uses the whole field. He battles pitchers and proved to be a touch out. Lightning speed on the base paths will make him a threat to steal, every time he's on. At SS, Gary moves fluidly around the GB from right to left. He gains ground and fires strong throws (88 mph) across the diamond with carry. Mattis is a prospect who has a very bright future ahead of him.

09/20/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Futures East Mattis has a muscular, defined look on a medium frame at 5-foot-10 and nearly 180 pounds. He posted 6.69 in the 60 yard dash, and got down the line around 4.5 from the right side of the plate. He is an immense talent defensively, showing excellent range and ability to make plays off balance and on the run. He moves with ease and quickness, features compact athletic actions no matter which way he is moving - his ability to make acrobatic plays is a treat to watch. At the plate, he features quick and strong hands. His stroke is compact and packs a punch, even without much extension thru contact he drives the ball from gap to gap. As long as he stays level and creates backspin, he stands to operate as a doubles machine - needs to maintain a flatter swing angle since he does not work the barrel thru contact that much. Overall, a naturally gifted infield defender with a chance to develop into a dual threat offensive player.

07/11/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One South Gary is a very talented player that has many playable tools. Offensively, he hit with quick hands and plus barrel feel, hitting line-drives with good backspin. He has raw power that leaves the yard with ease and is short/simple with his stroke for maximum repeatability. Defensively, he makes plays with soft hands and gets rid of the ball well to throw with carry. He has quick hands and moves very well laterally with quick feet. All in all - Mattis has another two years to continue strengthening for next level play and beyond.

09/22/2013 - College PREP - Jupiter, FL Gary continues to impress on the diamond. Offensively, he shows a crouched/open stance and solid base. He delivers the barrel to the zone with quick hands and creates extension, driving through it resulting in hard line-drives. Defensively, Gary tracks almost everything down that is hit his way. He plays through the ball well and fires the ball with carry into his target. Mattis will have success this upcoming season and will get looks to advance his game to the next level.

09/20/2013 - 2013 Under Armour Fall Classic - Upperclass Participant 9/21/13 - Athletic frame, good actions, soft hands, quick feet, good contact, stays through the baseball, ran well

07/12/2013 - Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Team One South Gary is a young, athletic SS that will graduate in 2016. Foot speed is tremendous as indicated by his 6.65 60 time. At the plate, Mattis shows outstanding hitting abilities with solid average power through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a short / direct / level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing the fields. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to load more and transfer weight through his lower half.

06/07/2013 - 2013 Under Armour Southeast Championships 16U Participant Lean, athletic body. Short, quick swing. Good bat path. Runs the bases well, usable speed. Presents glove well defensive, played through the ball well.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
