Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

06/24/2022 - Baseball Factory Select Training at the College World Series (MS) Gatlin showed a spike in offensive numbers and raised his exit velocity to 65 MPH during his last workout. At 1B, Gatlin is a good sized target, he plays on the balls of his feet, and he keeps the ball in front of his body. He presents well, fields out in front, and throws with a clean arm action with accuracy to his target. Offensively, Gatlin has a tall/square stance, activated hands, and a level swing plane. He has a consistent barrel, good hand-eye coordination, and he works the ball well gap to gap.

02/06/2022 - Official Player Development Membership - Pensacola, FL Gatlin is a young, 2-way player who catches and plays 1st base. Behind the plate, Gatlin has a presentable glove and playable hands and feet. He tracks well, tries hard to block, and throws with solid direction to 2nd base with pop times as low as 3.53 seconds. Catching can improve with quicker footwork and added arm strength. At 1B, Gatlin is a good sized target, he mores well to the ball, and fields out in front. His exchange is clean and he throws with a 3/4 arm slot with direction to his target. Abilities at 1st base can improve if Gatlin can quicken feet, play more through, and loosen arm action. At the plate, Gatlin has a crouched stance, a short stride, and a rhythmic swing. He gets the barrel through the zone and shows the ability to spray the ball to all fields.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
