Official Scouting Report

12/27/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Gavin is a coachable player who has a willingness to improve. On the mound, he utilizes his tall frame to stay on top and drive downhill toward the dish. He utilizes his lower ½ well and drives off of the rubber. He is around the zone with all pitches and lets his defense work, not giving up many free passes. Extension is clean out in front as he finishes complete. At 3B, Niland shows active footwork waiting for his pitch. He gathers well, has a clean exchange and gains ground toward 1B. At the plate, he has patience and tracks the ball into the zone. He hits the ball where it's pitched and drives it to all parts of the field. He battles and puts the barrel on the ball consistently. More lower ½ drive will help him to tap into his power potential. This versatile player should find success on the diamond.

12/14/2014 - National Tryout - Madison (NYC), NJ Gavin continues to develop his skills on the diamond. On the mound, arm works quick and clean as he stays directional toward the dish. FB now tops out at 78 mph as he works downhill and stays on top. Changeup has run and will get in on the RHH. At the not corner, he takes good angles around the ground ball, gets his shoulders in line and fires accurate throws across the diamond. Offensively, he has a balanced approach with patience. Swing path is level as he repeats well and squares the ball up. More extension through his finish will help to increase pop off of his barrel. Gavin is a hard worker who still has time to progress.

10/05/2014 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Gavin is a tall, athletic corner infielder graduating in 2016. At 3B, he fields the ball with his body under control. Working from right to left, Gavin gives accurate feeds/throws with good life. Polishing his glove flip and enhancing his footwork will improve his abilities as a corner fielder. Gavin showed improvement with his ability to drive the ball to all fields using his lower 1/2. He used his quick, smooth hands to stay inside the ball. Continuing to develop strength will improve his hitting abilities. Gavin has shown improvement each event he attends and will be one to watch in his upcoming junior season.

07/07/2014 - College PREP - Trenton, NJ Gavin is a 2016 RHP that showed the ability to throw 3 pitches with good control. On the hill, he topped out at 76 MPH with his 4-seam FB, 73 with his 2-seam, spun an 11/5 CB, and mixed in a CH with fade. He was mechanically sound and clean/free with his arm action. He threw a lot of fastball strikes and flashed some control of his off-speed stuff, but needs to be more consistent with his release points for command. Offensively, he hit with a contact approach and drove with his lower half. He had decent balance, but needs to work on his timing for maximum hit ability. All in all - Gavin is a raw pitcher that has another 2 years to add strength and consistency to his release point for next level play.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
