10/11/2017 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Gavin continues to show the makings of a special type player at the next level. At the plate is where he shows best through an open setup. Hands are quick (91 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, showing a feel for the barrel as he uses all fields with gap-to-gap pop. At the event, he was 5 for 10 with a 2B and 3B. Defensively, he utilizes his athletic footwork to move around the GB from right to left, working in-line towards his target at 1B. He attacks balls playing through well while presenting hands out in front. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. Throws are accurate with carry as he works to get rid of the baseball quickly. On the mound, fastball now tops out at 84 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with tailing action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. He is around the zone and challenges hitters to swing the bat. Gavin is a coachable player who makes adjustments quickly. His solid all-around skill-set will help him to make an impact in a variety of ways on the diamond.

08/20/2017 - College PREP - Lebanon (Nashville), TN Gavin is an athletic C/RHP prospect who will graduate in 2018. Behind the plate, Gavin shows efficient footwork and covers ground when blocking balls in the dirt. He presents a good target to the pitcher and tracks the ball well into his glove. He has a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws to 2B and keeps them accurate and on-line to the bag. Gavin can improve defensively by setting up in a lower position. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes his stride on time. He is fluid getting back into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half. He takes a level swing with fast bat speed which leads to square contact and good pop. On the mound, Gavin shows a smooth motion as he gathers over the rubber and works with a free and easy arm action. He has a four pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 82mph with late running action. Curveball sits from 65-67mph with late 11-5 break. Slider ranges from 78-80mph. Changeup sits from 72-73mph with good sinking action as he throws with fastball arm speed. Gavin can improve as a pitcher by driving his lower half more towards the plate. Overall, Gavin is a talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Gavin's athleticism and strength complement his corner infield power profile perfectly. He has fluid actions in the box with strong, active hands. He has a balanced swing through a level path and is able to make consistent contact to drive the ball, showing pull side pop. At the hot corner, his feet work quickly to field low to the ball with soft hands. His hands are quick to exchange as he plays through and makes on target throws across the diamond. Gavin's impressive skills are sure to turn some heads whenever he takes the field.

10/26/2016 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Gavin is a solid, athletic player who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying outstanding hitting/power potential. Hands are quick (91 mph exit velocity) through an aggressive approach. He has strength in his swing and stays inside the ball with power to all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off the bat when centered. At the event, he was 4 for 4 with a 2B, 3B, and 3 BB as he shows a good eye and patient approach. At 3B, defensive abilities are well above average, displaying smooth/fluid actions. Feet are active as he works around and plays through balls with his body. He moves well laterally and presents soft/sure hands well out front. Hands/feet work well together and he gets rid of the baseball quickly with life, carry, and accuracy on his throws. Range will improve as he increases foot quickness. On the mound, control is outstanding as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Fastball showed a range of 77-78 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late/sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup showing a solid feel for the pitch. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in stock on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude, works hard, and he is a student of the game. With 2 years to further develop, Gavin has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
