Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/OFPosition Projection

10/15/2008 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic - 2008 Boyson nudged his top end fastball velocity up one mph, from 80 to 81. He also showed better rotation and depth on his breaking ball, moving that pitch up closer to above average. Though he slowed his delivery and arm action on his change, he did show some feel to use it and was able to set it up by moving his fastball in and out. All in all, he showed two solid pitches and potential for a third. His delivery was a bit herky jerky - this helped him by creating some deception, and hurt him by allowing for some arm wrap and excess shoulder rotation. At the plate, he looked good from the left side of the plate. Can work to stay back and closed longer. Arm strength showed in the outfield, and he moved his feet well. Ran 7.04 in the 60-yard dash, only slightly off what we saw before. Overall, an athletic player with potential to develop further both on the mound and as a position player.

06/19/2008 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - 2008 Boyson ran 6.98 in the 60-yard dash, over two tenths of a second better than the 7.23 we had seen from him previously. He also topped at 80 mph on the mound, a jump of one mph on his top end fastball - there are reports of him touching 82 mph in a high school championship game, though we have not seen it ourselves. No matter his top end velocity, he is effective because of his ability to throw strikes and to move his pitches around the zone. His fastball and breaking ball are usable pitches. Can work to maintain better arm speed on his curve, should help him improve the spin and action on the pitch. At the plate, he showed good bat speed and gap power. Can work to stay back longer and to shorten his stroke a bit. In the outfield, his breaks and routes were solid. Overall, a potential two-way player at the college level that has shown improvement over the last year.

11/11/2007 - ACR-E California 6 Greg showed energy and hustle throughout the workout. In the OF, shows loose arm action and quick feet and reaction from ball off bat. Takes good angles, make good adjustments, and has a low approach to fielding ball and plays through it well. Would like to see a higher arm slot to eliminate arm-side run and quicker release. By keeping front side closed, he can get more body on the throw instead of all arm. On the mound, shows easy actions, good direction toward HP, and has consistent mechanics. Would like to see more explosion and aggressiveness out of lower half. Arm speed and arm strength will improve with lots of long toss. As LH hitter, shows good BA with power. Would like to see him be balanced at set which will improve use of lower half. Keep front side closed so he doesn't pull everything. As RH hitter, shows good load, proper path to hitting zone, and tracks ball well. Would like to see balance is swing which will improve use of lower half.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
