Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

08/04/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Grey continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. He improved his foot speed at the event as he ran his best 60 time to date, now an above average runner at 7.39. In the OF, he utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in tracking down balls as he reads well off the bat and takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He needs to work to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact and has some strength in his swing with power numbers improving as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 78 mph. Fastball showed a range of 74-78 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will improve as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and plays the game hard.

03/23/2014 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Grey is a lean OF/LHP that will graduate in 2016. Foot speed is slightly above average as indicated by his 7.46 60 time. Defensive abilities in the OF are well above average as he displays smooth / clean actions. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles to track balls down. He reads balls well off the bat and works to get behind balls, playing through well, and covers a lot of ground, displaying range. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he learns to use 2 hands through the fielding process. Throws are accurate, flashing carry as he gets rid of the baseball quickly but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program and raising arm slot. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are loose, working to and through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Hitting grades will continue to improve, as he learns to maintain balance throughout the swing. Power numbers will improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 74-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He slows arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters and needs to create more movement. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and works to throw more strikes. With 2 years to further develop, Grey has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
