12/20/2016 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Griffin is a well rounded athlete who worked hard on his skill-set during his time at Pirate City. He is a very coachable player who has a willingness to learn. Defensively, he shows active prep footwork and moves well on the balls of his feet. He works around the GB from right to left and tracks the ball into a soft mitt. He has a clean exchange and makes accurate throws across the diamond. Continuing to strengthen his arm (long toss) will help to take his skills on the left side of the infield to the next level. As a hitter, Speaks has a square/tall set with fluid rhythm to load. He tracks pitches into the zone and off of the barrel, squaring the ball up and driving it on a line. Swinging on a shorter/more direct path while engaging more of his lower 1/2 will help to improve skills at the plate. On the mound, this RHP pounds the zone with strikes. He works his FB in and out as it has slight run, now topping out at 75 mph. Changeup compliments his FB well as he maintains good arm-speed, helping to create deception. Working to drive off of the rubber more with his lower 1/2 will help to get even more into his FB. Only a 2019 grad - Griffin has a solid skill-set with upside as he continues to develop.

06/12/2016 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Griffin is lean/athletic SS/OF who has a bright future on the diamond. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.16. At SS, he utilizes his quick feet well in his lateral movement, displaying range in the MIF. Hands are clean as he presents well out front and on time. In the OF, defensive abilities are well above average, displaying smooth, fluid actions. Feet are active as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He works to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together with accuracy and on line carry to his throws, displaying well above average arm strength. At the plate he shows as a switch hitter but projects best from the left side. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level / aggressive swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and works to stay inside the ball, flashing gap to gap pop. With 3 years to further develop, Griffin has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the colleigate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
