Official Scouting Report

  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

01/12/2018 - 2018 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Gus is a projectable (6'3"/200) 2-way player who showed well during his time at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. At 1B, he has active prep with athletic actions as he moves well to GB's hit to his right and left. Hands are soft as he tracks the ball into his mitt. Arm is strong with carry on his throws. As a hitter, Gus displays an open stance with centered balance. Hands are relaxed and loose as he's ready to whip the barrel. Swing is short/compact to and through the zone as he squares the ball up and it jumps off of his barrel (exit velo = 90 mph). He will fit nicely in a clean-up type of roll. On the mound, this RHP works tall and drives downhill, in-line toward the dish. He has smooth separation, good glove-side lead and repeats his delivery well. FB still sits low to mid 80's while showing slight tail. He works it to both sides of the plate and challenges hitters. Curveball has good action and can be thrown for a strike in any count. Collins possesses the tools that will garner him attention from coaches at the next level.

07/19/2017 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 16U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Gus is an athletic, strong built RHP/1B prospect who has a versatile skill set and graduates in 2019. On the mound, Gus has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He has a clean arm action and extends through his release. Gus stays square to home plate with a controlled landing. He effectively rotates with his core towards his target as he finishes. Gus throws a heavy fastball with good run at 79-84 MPH. He commands his slider with 11-5 o'clock break. Gus also features a developing changeup and curveball. Offensively, Gus has a tall, athletic setup with a firm front side and centered balance. He has smooth rhythm with a good load and short stride. Gus displays explosive bat speed and strong hands with an on-plane swing path. He gets good extension and produces consistent contact. Gus has above average power and the ability to drive the ball to each gap. In the field, Gus plays with active footwork and agile actions playing the position athletically. He presents his glove and fields the ball in an athletic position. Gus has a clean exchange leading into a loose arm action throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He plays with good momentum through the baseball producing consistently strong throws across the diamond. Gus shows smooth footwork around the bag and he does a nice job picking the baseball. Mental makeup is a plus for Gus as he shows to be very coachable and continues to asks questions in order to get better. He is a very hard worker who hustles on and off the field and is willing to make adjustments. Overall, Gus has talent on both sides of the ball with a good approach giving him a bright future on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
