Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

08/29/2021 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Boise, ID Hunter has made impressive gains in the 4 years we've known him. On the bump, he flashes command of a three pitch mix; fastball, curveball and changeup. He gets to his balance point consistently and is rather effortless in creating a downhill plane. At the hot corner, his feet and hands work well together and he's able to throw from multiple arm slots all with carry. All that being said, where he shines the most is with the stick. Hunter gets his hips through on every swing with extension and a high finish creating backspin and gap-to-gap power. We predict a solid finish to Thompson's high school career.

01/15/2021 - 2021 Baseball Factory Pre-Season All-America Tournament (TX) Hunter is a strong 1B/RHP prospect who showed well during the Pre-Season All-America Tournament. In the field, Hunter shows efficient footwork and takes good angles to the ball. He fields with soft hands and has a clean exchange. He gets rid of the ball quickly and makes on-line throws through his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance with center balance. He is fluid to load and drives through well with his lower half. He works through a level swing with fast bat speed, leading to loud contact and great pull side power (88mph exit velo). On the mound, Hunter gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and finishes square to the plate. Hunter shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 84mph. Breaking ball sits from 70-72mph with 11-5 break. Overall, Hunter is a talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

09/20/2020 - Official College Recruiting Membership - Boise, ID Hunter continues to show as a top prospect with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 3B, defensive abilities are solid as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are active as he works around balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, hitting / power potential is now outstanding through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (87 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 78 mph. Fastball shows good cutting action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is well above average as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

09/16/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Boise, ID Hunter is an athletic RHP/3B prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. On the mound, Hunter gathers over the rubber and works with a quick, clean arm. He shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 72mph with tailing action. Breaking ball sits from 54-58mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 58-63mph with arm side run as he throws with deceptive arm speed. Hunter can improve as a pitcher by gathering to a balance point over the rubber. In the field, Hunter shows the proper footwork and centers the ball in the middle of his body. He funnels well and makes accurate throws to his target. Hunter can improve defensively by taking a quicker first step. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an open stance and works to barrel up the baseball. Hunter can improve as a hitter by working a smoother load into his swing. With four more years to develop, Hunter has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

12/27/2017 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 (Ages 12-14) Hunter continues to shine on the diamond with improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 3B, he displays smooth actions. Feet are active as he attacks balls but needs to play through more with his body. Glove action is clean and presents well out front. He moves well laterally with range improving as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he shows a tall setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 58-61 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

09/17/2017 - Interactive Video Program - Boise, ID Hunter is a strong, 2-way player at SS/RHP. Defensively at SS, he hustles hard laterally as he tries to get into a square fielding position. He comes up with a clean exchange and fires the ball with loose arm action. On the mound, this RHP is a reliever type. He delivers a (FB, CB) with clean arm action and tries to finish strong towards home plate. As a hitter, Hunter keeps his hands activated. He whips his barrel fast through the zone and consistently drives pitches on a line. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
