12/27/2009 - Christmas Camp and Tournament #2 Hunter is a two-way player and has a short, stocky body with some projection to it. On the mound, he works out of the stretch the entire time. Delivery is sound as he displays solid mechanics, hiding the baseball well. He attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Fastball shows a range of 76-82 mph with sinking action on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with late breaking action. Changeup shows decent feel for with late action. Whalen shows as a situation type guy that suits well coming out of the bullpen. In the OF, Whalen has above average foot speed as indicated by his 7.08 60 time as he utilizes his quick, athletic feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls as he works to get behind to play through with momentum to his target. Throws show life, carry, and accuracy. At the plate, hands are quick, flashing bat speed as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. He shows future power potential as the lower half works well through the swing. Hunter has a lot of abilities and could possibly be a two-way player at the next level.
