10/12/2016 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Ian is a hardworking OF prospect who graduates in 2017. At the plate, Ian has an open stance and takes a good load as he is ready to hit on every pitch. He maintains a centered balance throughout his swing and does a nice job utilizing his lower half. Ian finds the ball with barrel often showing consistent, square contact. In the outfield, Ian has an athletic pre-pitch and active footwork giving him solid range. He attacks the baseball and fields it athletically. Ian has soft hands and is working on quickening his exchange. He has a long arm action throwing from a 3/4 slot. Ian is willing and able to make the diving play. Overall, Ian is an aggressive player who plays hard and has a solid skill set to impact a program at the next level.

07/27/2016 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 17U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Ian is a strong prospect for the next level who uses his athleticism to his advantage. He is a dangerous hitter with good pop and an explosive bat to and through contact. He keeps his hands inside the ball to handle all pitches and drive the ball gap to gap. His swing is direct and he makes consistent, hard contact in his at bats. In the field, he charges the ball aggressively with a quick first step. He gets good jumps on ground balls and fly balls and shows off an accurate arm to his target. Ian is a talented prospect who makes an impact on the field and has the tools to play at the next level.

06/18/2016 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 Ian is a very hard worker who is coachable and a quick learner. He hustles at all times and plays the game the right way. With the bat, this RHH has a balanced setup with rhythm to load. He takes a hack, works to engage his lower 1/2 and drives the ball where it's pitched on a line. Creating more hand separation on his load will allow for more leverage and increased power. In the OF, Ian has active prep and works lightly on the balls of his feet. He takes solid routes/angles and puts himself into position behind the fly-ball. He has a high baseball IQ, reading hitters tendencies and adjusting his position accordingly. Cooney has a solid skill-set that will provide success as he enters his senior year.

02/07/2016 - College PREP - San Diego, CA Ian is a 6'1/190 lbs junior outfielder that showed strong hit ability and power at his first outing with Baseball Factory. Offensively, he had strong hands to deliver the barrel on a direct path to contact. He generated good backspin at contact and the ball jumped off his bat. He worked the middle of the field, and flashed gap power as he rotated his core to accelerate through the zone and extended out over the front side. In the OF, he worked his glove in front and on-time to make plays and threw with momentum to his targets. He was aggressive to work behind and through the ball and with added foot speed and arm strength can play any of the three spots. In all - Ian is an intriguing follow that will work his way in many lineups with his strong offensive skill.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
