Official Scouting Report

  • RHP/1BPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament J.P. has a bright future with his impressive repertoire on the mound and ability to provide value in the field and at the plate. He competes on the mound with a true 3 pitch mix of above average pitches. He hits 86mph on his fastball with run, his 10-4 curveball has late, sharp break and deceptive changeup runs in to right handers. He works in and out to righties and lefties with great command to hit his spot and get outs with efficiency. At first, he fields square to the ball to keep everything in front. He shows a clean exchange to throw and has an accurate arm around the infield. His middle approach and level path lead to lots of contact. His strong base and balanced swing lead to some feel for the barrel and the ability to impact the ball with authority. J.P. has a bright future in the game with his wide range of skills.

06/17/2016 - USA Baseball 17U Championships JP is a reliable righty who competes every time he toes the rubber. This projectable RHP has an effective 3-pitch arsenal in which to keep hitters guessing. He maintains fluid tempo, works tall and drives off of the rubber downhill toward the plate. FB cracks the mitt at 86 mph while showing good tailing action. Slider shows 10/4 shape and is a solid swing and miss pitch. Splitter has downward action and gets GB outs. He commands the well and can hit his spots. At 1B - JP is a big target and can move around the bag well. He can go and get the ball with the ability to pick throws out of the dirt. As a hitter - this lefty has a balanced setup with patience as he waits for a pitch he likes. Swing is level/repeatable as he squares the ball up and looks to drive the middle of the field (collecting 4 singles at the event). Shaw is a solid pitching prospect who is one to keep an eye on as he approaches his senior year.

02/15/2016 - College PREP - Palmyra (Harrisburg), PA JP Shaw is an impressive junior arm that ran his FB up to 86 in his first outing with Baseball Factory. On the mound, he showed tail to his FB that he worked down in the zone from 85-86, and spun an exceptional CB from 66-70. The third pitch in his arsenal was a CH with tail from 66-70, but he had a tendency to slow his actions, tipping the pitch. Mechanically, he was sound, with life in his arm, and he was controlled to land and finish with his chest over his front knee. He hid the ball well for plus deception and repeated his delivery to stay in the zone. Offensively, he generated plus pop with leverage and bat speed, and rotated his core for added torque. He used his lower half efficiently and with improved rhythm with his hands will add even more barrel accuracy and pop. Overall - JP is an intriguing cold weather arm that topped out at 86 in the middle of February - needless to say, we are looking forward to seeing his progress this summer.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
