11/08/2012 - Baseball Factory Training & Competition at Pirate City Jake is an athletic 1B/RHP that will graduate in 2016. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag with clean / sure hands. He needs to improve foot quickness and present hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. At the plate, Johnston shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Hands are loose / quick, flashing bat speed and he makes consistent hard contact. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable, allowing his arm action to work loose / free to the plate. Fastball shows a range of 68-71 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained and he improves his control. Mental makeup is a plus as he very coachable and plays with a lot of positive energy. With 4 years to further develop, Jack has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
