01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Burns showed as a two-way player on the mound plus at 1B for the first time. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, showing soft, clean hands. He needs to attack ground balls more while presenting his hands out front to improve defensive grades. At the plate, Jacob shows a balanced approach with quick hands attacking the baseball. He shows good barrel accuracy with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. To improve hitting grades, he needs to work to keep his hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. On the mound, his fastball showed a range of 79-82 mph with solid sink and tailing action. His breaking ball displays downward tilt with gradual break. Knuckleball shows 12/6 tumbling action and flashes potential to be a quality pitch. He attacks hitters as he throws strikes with all his pitches, changing speeds well.
07/19/2011 - College PREP - Sanford (Orlando), FL Jacob is a tall and thick LHP that will graduate in 2014. He shows good command of both his fastball and curveball. His fastball tops out at 81 mph showing good arm side run on it. His curveball shows 2/8 break with good arm speed with some depth to it. He throws from an over the top arm slot with good tempo. His front foot lands soundly and he is in line toward his target. A few things to work on are a better balance point, better extension after he releases the pitch and a longer stride to his target. His wind up is a bit rushed but he is young and raw and has time to work on his mechanics. He is a big bodied LHP with a high ceiling.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.
Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
