Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2013 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Jacob is a senior 1B/RHP that showed best offensively, in his most recent Factory event. With the stick, he had a nice swing with some bat speed and hip rotation. He displayed some strength to the pull side and had good balance throughout. Staying short and compact with his path will increase pop and hit ability. Defensively, he made the routine, and showed a familiarity with the bag. On the mound, he threw a fastball and competed with some deception. In all - Mason is a nice kid that showed a willingness to work to improve.

11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Jacob is a two way player who showcased at 1B and on the mound. In the infield, he has improved his fielding position and continues to be aggressive to the ball. His hands are firm and shows proper footwork around the bag. At the plate, he shows good balance, smooth load, and a good lower half. He makes consistent contact with a level swing. On the mound he has good rhythm, smooth delivery, and stays around the zone with his fastball. With more lower half he could develop some more velocity and have a stronger finish.

09/15/2013 - College PREP - Oklahoma City, OK Mason only showed at 1B at the event and continues to show steady play in baseball abilities. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. He works to square ground balls up but needs to attack balls more, increase foot quickness, and present hands more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup and loads well. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more.

04/14/2013 - College PREP - Albuquerque, NM Mason has a solid build on his 6-foot-2 220 pound frame. In the infield, he worked his feet around the bag well and did a good job of starting the double play. Fielding position was narrow, resulting in stiff glove action - can widen out, get lower and soften up. At the plate, he hit from a closed stance. Got his hands working back, and took a short stride. Tended to bar his lead arm and wrapped the bat with his top hand, setting up a long and stiff swing - can work to soften up and get the barrel working back in front of him on a shorter route to contact. Showed some power to the pull side. On the mound, he topped at 61 with his fastball. His arm worked short from the glove, and with effort and stiffness out front. Landed hard and spun off to the 1B side, not allowing his lower half and core to help generate arm speed. Fits better as a position player, where he has some left handed power potential.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
