12/18/2016 - National Tryout - Madison (NYC), NJ Jacob is a projectable (6'5"/165) 2-way player as a LHP/1B. On the mound, this lefty has a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, SINK) coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works to a tall/controlled balance point and stays directional toward his target. FB ranges from 68-70 mph while showing slight tailing action. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with late action - 56-58 mph. Sinker shows slight 'tilt' as he works to keep it down in the zone. Driving off of the rubber more with his lower 1/2 and finishing with extension will both help to improve effectiveness on all pitches. At 1B, Schmidt hustles into a square fielding position behind the GB. He tracks the ball into his mitt and gathers well. As a hitter, this righty displays a closed setup with smooth rhythm to load. Swing path is level as he barrels the ball up and drives it on a line. Only a 2019 grad - Jacob has a solid skill-set with upside and he continues to progress.

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
