Official Scouting Report

  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

01/16/2015 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament This talented athlete continues to show well on the diamond. Defensively, he has smooth/quick actions working right to left around the GB. Glove presentation is out in front as he has a quick/clean exchange to throw. He moves well laterally and can make the tough backhand play in the hole. With the bat, Jarius has simple/quiet actions with a balanced setup. Swing path is level as he squares the ball up consistently, spraying the ball to all parts of the field. On the mound, this RHP gets strong glove side lead with good glove tuck. FB shows run which will get in on the RHH's. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape as is thrown for strikes consistently. This (6'1"/165) 2-way player has the versatility to make things happen in many aspects of the game.

10/08/2014 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Richards continues to show as a RHP/3B, projecting best at 3B for the next level. At 3B, defensive grades are outstanding as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are quick / active as he works to square balls up, moves well to glove side, and displays soft / clean hands. He attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body while presenting hands out front and shows big play potential at 3B. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup with balance. Hands are quick, generating bat speed and work through a level swing path. He is aggressive early in the count and shows a feel for the barrel when centered. Once on base, he is an aggressive base runner with plus instincts. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 82- 83 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with sinking action. Split finger show plus downward action and misses a lot of bats. Off speed stuff show as outstanding pitches that will get outs at the next level. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude and is a hard worker with a great competitive nature.

09/28/2014 - National Tryout - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Jarius continues to shine on the diamond. This versatile athlete makes things happen when he steps onto the field. Defensively, he has fluid/athletic actions moving smoothly from right to left through the ground ball. He can make the tough backhand play in the hole and fires it with zip across the diamond. At the plate, Richards shows a relaxed approach with simple actions. Barrel delivery is quick with bat whip on a short/direct path. He connects and drives the ball with pop. On the bump, this RHP has a 4-pitch arsenal in which to attack hitters. FB cracks the mitt at 84 mph while showing some tail. He works downhill and drives off the rubber. Slider has 'nasty' 11/5 shape with sharp break. It will be a pitch that hitters will have a tough time laying off of. Chanegup shows sink and compliments FB well. An all-around talent - Jarius has a bright future ahead of him in the game.

01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Jarius is a gutsy player on the diamond. The third baseman fields with his hands out in front of his body and works through balls well to provide an accurate throw. Although Jarius works through the ball well, reducing the number of steps he takes would be beneficial as runners are faster at the next level. Also, getting his nose into more grounders would help defensive grades improve as he tends to stab at the ball on occasion. At the dish, Jarius uses all fields and has an aggressive approach. He takes a direct swing path to the ball and attacks it when he sees his pitch. Growing into his body and adding some weight should help Jarius' strength and lead to more pop in his bat. Also, not dropping his hands when he loads should help create more consistent contact. Overall, Jarius is a solid player that will generate looks from college coaches.

09/29/2013 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Jarius is a talented prospect at 3B as well as in the OF. Offensively, this strong left-handed swinger gets back into a loaded position and delivers the barrel with authority. He has quiet actions and jumps on the pitch he wants. He has pop off of his barrel driving it to all fields. Defensively in the OF, Richards tracks down balls hit into the gaps with his speed (7.07 60 yard dash). He is aggressive and plays through the ground ball well, firing it to his target. At the hot corner, Jarius shows plus footwork and has a good backhand technique. He has smooth actions and fielding the ball cleanly. Jarius will get some attention thanks to his abilities on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
