01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Jake has molded himself into quite a prospect in the OF. A quick first step and plus speed allow him to track down balls hit into the gaps. He plays through the ball and utilizes his lower 1/2, firing throws with carry. At the plate, this righty has a simple approach with quiet actions. Smooth rhythm allows him to get back into a strong loaded position as he is ready to jump on the first good pitch he sees. He consistently squares the ball up, driving it on a line. Artz will turn some heads this upcoming season thanks to his skill-set on the diamond. He has a bright future in the game.

09/29/2013 - College PREP - Scranton, PA Jake improved his arm strength and defensive grade, both now showing as outstanding tools. He topped out at 85 mph at the arm strength station with throws displaying life, accuracy, and on line carry through his target as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. In the OF, he utilizes his quick / athletic feet well as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls while working to get behind, playing through with momentum to his target. He plays with a ton of energy and covers a lot of ground, displaying range. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, generating bat speed through a level / compact swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and uses his lower half well with baseball jumping off the bat when centered.

08/05/2013 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Jake did very well at Pirate City. He continues to show solid skills at the plate, good coachability, and solid defensive skills. Offensively, this was the best we have seen Jake. He has good balance, fast bat speed, and he has the ability to hit to all fields. He knows the strike zone, he swings in good rhythm, and he flashes pop in his bat. He has power to the gaps and showed a lot of rhythm and patience. He was 6 for 9 during game play in the tournament and was a catalyst for his team. Staying back on the curveball and continuing to strengthen his lower half can help his already above average hitting grades to improve. In the OF, Jake has quick feet, he reads the ball off the bat well, and he takes proper angles. Jake makes plays, and he throws with accuracy to his target from a long and over the top arm action. He has good pre pitch actions and shows nice footwork throughout the fielding process. Having seen Jake a couple of times this summer, it is very clear that he is a coachable player that wants to get better. He is a great energy guy and a personable and respectful player that will be a great addition to a college program in a couple of years.

06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Artz continues to progress in his game. The quick OF lowered his 60 time (7.02) helping his ability to track down fly balls in the gaps. He takes good angles and shows aggressiveness. His footwork is quick, he has above average range, and he has a natural feel for the position. At the plate, he put the ball in play and went 4-8 with 2 singles and 2 doubles. He gets good torque from his core and uses his lower 1/2 very well to drive balls to the gaps. His hitting is advanced for his age. He shows plenty of confidence at the plate and puts the ball in play consistently. Jake's skill-set will give him success on the diamond as he continues to mature over these next couple of years.

02/24/2013 - College PREP - Mechanicsburg (Harrisburg), PA Jake is an athletic OF who will graduate in 2015. He posted an above average 60 yard dash with a 7.16 time. In the OF, Jake attacks the ball aggressively, his feet are active, and he fields athletically. He makes plays, his release is quick, and he throws with a loose arm action with accuracy through to his target. Defense can improve with a softer glove and added arm strength. Offensively, Jake has an open / athletic stance, good balance, and fast bat speed. His hands are quick, swing level, and he gets his lower 1/2 through. His overall approach is very solid and he shows some power potential as well for his age and size. Letting the ball travel and being able to drive the away pitch to opposite field will help his solid hitting numbers improve. Jake will be a player to watch as he gets older.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
